Silicon Motion earnings showed a sharp third-quarter expansion as enterprise storage and AI-related demand lifted revenue. The company reported net sales of $560.2 million for the quarter ended September 30, up 131% from a year earlier and 24% from the second quarter.

AI Storage Demand Lifts Silicon Motion Earnings

Silicon Motion said enterprise and edge applications drove its changing sales mix. Its MonTitan enterprise and AI controllers began scaling, while customers prioritized supply assurance as higher memory costs pressured consumer-device markets.

The move toward enterprise storage extends the AI infrastructure theme seen in Rambus memory-interface revenue. It also complements the chip-cycle evidence in NXP’s latest earnings, although the companies serve different semiconductor markets.

Margins Expand as Revenue More Than Doubles

The company’s October 29 earnings release showed GAAP gross margin improved to 53.6% from 48.6% a year earlier. GAAP operating margin rose to 29.0% from 12.1%, reflecting higher revenue and improved operating leverage.

GAAP net income reached $65.3 million, compared with $39.1 million a year earlier. However, it fell from $136.1 million in the second quarter because investment revaluation moved from a large gain to a $78.0 million loss.

Fourth-Quarter Outlook Keeps Growth Elevated

Management projected fourth-quarter revenue between $588 million and $616 million. The midpoint implies further sequential growth, while the forecasted GAAP operating margin of 29.9% to 31.4% would remain well above last year’s level.

Silicon Motion also held $953.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash at quarter-end after issuing $1.15 billion of convertible notes. Future results will show whether AI controller sales can sustain the growth rate as memory costs rise and enterprise demand broadens alongside data-center infrastructure spending.
