The Commodity Futures Trading Commission plans to double the publication frequency of its Commitments of Traders reports by the end of 2026. The change gives market participants more timely information about futures and options positioning.
CFTC COT Reports Move to Twice-Weekly Releases
The CFTC announced the schedule on October 27. Position data collected Monday will publish Wednesday, while Wednesday data will publish Friday. Both releases will arrive at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.
The current weekly process carries a three-day delay. The new schedule reduces that latency to two days. The agency said its Division of Data will use modernization and automation while maintaining accuracy.
Faster Position Data Could Improve Market Context
Commitments of Traders reports break down open futures and options positions across participant categories. Traders, producers and researchers use the data to assess how commercial hedgers and financial participants are positioned.
The CFTC said feedback from agricultural market participants helped shape the change. Faster publication may improve context during volatile sessions, but the reports will still describe positions from earlier reporting dates rather than live exposure. That distinction also matters when interpreting the agency’s event-contract proposals.
Publication Change Does Not Rewrite Trading Rules
The announcement changes the release timetable, not position limits, reporting obligations or the legal classification of contracts. It therefore represents a market-data modernization project rather than a new trading rule.
The operational change follows other CFTC work on market integrity, including its information-sharing agreement with the NBA. It also gives investors another positioning input alongside macro events such as the Federal Reserve’s October meeting.
| Position date | Publication date | Release time |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Wednesday | 3:30 p.m. ET |
| Wednesday | Friday | 3:30 p.m. ET |
The CFTC said the twice-weekly schedule will begin by the end of 2026. The October 27 announcement did not provide a specific launch date.
