Asset Servicing pretax income rose 38% to $405.2 million. Wealth Management pretax income increased 14% to $391.6 million.
The results fit a broader pattern of financial companies benefiting from stronger spreads and fee activity. Recent coverage includes Dime Community Bancshares’ margin expansion, GM’s earnings and capital-return plan, and AT&T’s revenue growth.
Assets reach new scale as operating leverage improves
Assets under custody or administration rose to $19.9 trillion. Within that total, assets under custody were $15.8 trillion, while assets under management reached $2.0 trillion.
Those measures are related but not interchangeable. Custody and administration assets track client assets serviced by Northern Trust, while assets under management represent portfolios for which it makes investment decisions.
Excluding notable items, management said revenue grew 11% and pretax income rose 21%. The resulting operating leverage exceeded 600 basis points, showing expenses grew more slowly than revenue.
The quarter’s figures appear in Northern Trust’s October 21 earnings release. The publication date is distinct from the three-month operating period covered by the report.
