IBM Siemens nanostack research moved into a new development phase on October 14, 2026. IBM said the collaboration will combine its semiconductor work with Siemens design, simulation, lithography and manufacturing software to prepare the three-dimensional transistor architecture for future production.

IBM Siemens Nanostack Research Moves Into Modeling

IBM announced that Siemens will contribute electronic design automation, process simulation and lithography optimization. The partners plan to create virtual models that test performance and fabrication challenges before physical chips are built.

The work extends IBM’s June demonstration of nanostack technology. IBM describes the design as vertically stacked and staggered nanosheet transistors, moving transistor density beyond the two-dimensional layout used by conventional chips.

Why IBM Siemens Nanostack Architecture Matters for AI

The current 7-angstrom version contains nearly 100 billion transistors in a fingernail-sized area, according to IBM. Its research explainer projects almost twice the transistor density of its 2-nanometer nanosheet technology, alongside 70% lower energy use and a 50% speed increase.

Those figures remain IBM projections rather than commercial-product benchmarks. Still, higher density and lower power demand could support AI training and AI inference, where chip efficiency affects computing capacity and operating costs.

Manufacturing Remains the Central Test

IBM said nanostack production requires improved wafer alignment, wiring and high-resolution lithography. Siemens’ simulation tools could help identify these constraints earlier, but the announcement did not disclose a fabrication schedule, capital budget or commercial customer.

The collaboration adds another research path as manufacturers expand advanced-chip capacity. IBM’s work sits alongside projects such as the GlobalFoundries fab plan and new accelerators including Microsoft’s Maia 300. Investors should separate laboratory projections from qualified manufacturing output.
