3M raised its full-year profit outlook after third-quarter earnings showed stronger margins and higher per-share income, even as reported sales grew only modestly. The company said it now expects adjusted earnings of $9.10 to $9.15 a share for 2026, tightening and lifting its prior range.

3M Earnings Show Margin Expansion

3M’s October 20 earnings release showed third-quarter GAAP sales of $6.6 billion, up 1.0% from a year earlier. Adjusted sales also reached $6.6 billion, rising 4.2%, while adjusted organic sales growth was 3.3%.

The earnings increase outpaced the sales gain because profitability improved. Investors often use operating margin to judge how much revenue remains after operating costs, and 3M’s GAAP measure climbed to 23.7% from 22.2% a year earlier.

Cash Flow and Guidance Move Higher

3M generated $500 million of operating cash flow and $1.2 billion of adjusted free cash flow during the quarter. It returned $600 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, while forecasting about $5.9 billion of adjusted operating cash flow and $4.8 billion of adjusted free cash flow for the full year.

Management also raised its sales outlook to adjusted growth above 4.5% and adjusted organic growth above 3.5%. Those targets matter because industrial companies still face the type of sourcing and logistics risks described in our guide to supply-chain chokepoint disruptions.

Amazon Agreement Adds a Data-Center Angle

3M separately disclosed a commercial agreement tied to optical products for Amazon and its affiliates, including data-center infrastructure. The associated warrant covers up to 3.2 million 3M shares, with part of the vesting tied to $6 billion in cumulative sales over seven years.

The arrangement gives 3M another connection to the infrastructure behind cloud and artificial-intelligence spending. It also offers an industrial counterpart to the capital-expenditure questions in our Alphabet Q3 earnings preview, although the warrant conditions do not guarantee that the full sales threshold will be reached.
