Northrop Grumman raised key 2026 targets after quarterly sales climbed across all four operating segments. The defense contractor also reported record backlog and stronger cash generation.

The company’s October 20 earnings release showed demand outpaced revenue during the quarter. That leaves investors weighing a larger order book against modest margin pressure.

Northrop Grumman earnings set a backlog record

Quarterly revenue rose from $10.423 billion a year earlier, led by Aeronautics Systems and Defense Systems. Those two segments grew 14% and 12%, respectively, while Mission Systems and Space Systems each added 2%.

The mix reinforces themes highlighted in our defense stocks earnings watch. It also broadens the aerospace order picture discussed in our Boeing earnings preview.

Northrop Grumman earnings show mixed margins

Operating income increased 2% to $1.269 billion, but the operating margin fell to 11.4% from 11.9%. Segment operating margin also eased to 12.1% from 12.3%, partly because the prior year included a favorable Mission Systems adjustment.

Net earnings rose 2% to $1.124 billion as a lower tax rate helped offset weaker other income. Adjusted free cash flow jumped 44% to $1.810 billion, including proceeds from equipment sold to a customer.

Guidance and the award pipeline

Management now expects 2026 sales of $43.75 billion to $44.25 billion. It lifted the segment operating-income range to $4.94 billion–$5.04 billion and MTM-adjusted EPS to $29.35–$29.75.

The $16.4 billion of new awards included $4.6 billion for restricted programs, $2.0 billion for Sentinel and $1.3 billion for the F-35. The result offers another data point for the aerospace demand trend behind the large Turkish Airlines engine agreement, although defense budgets and program execution remain separate risks.
