M&T Bank reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $775 million, down from $818 million in the second quarter and $792 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose 5% from a year ago to $5.04, according to the bank’s October 16 earnings release filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The results add another data point to a mixed regional-bank earnings season. Investors are weighing stable interest income against firmer credit provisions and operating costs, themes also visible in recent results from Regions Financial.
M&T Bank earnings show higher EPS from a year ago
Net interest income was $1.793 billion, little changed from $1.792 billion in the prior quarter and up from $1.761 billion a year earlier. Noninterest income totaled $743 million, versus $740 million in the second quarter and $752 million in the year-earlier period.

For the first nine months of 2026, net income increased 8% to $2.257 billion from $2.092 billion. The results can be compared with Truist’s third-quarter update, where fee income and expenses also shaped the earnings mix.
Credit costs and expenses increase
M&T’s provision for credit losses increased to $135 million from $120 million in the second quarter and $125 million a year earlier. Net charge-offs represented 0.35% of average loans, while the common equity Tier 1 ratio stood at 10.16%.
Noninterest expense rose to $1.393 billion from $1.349 billion in the second quarter and $1.363 billion a year ago. Average loans increased 2% sequentially across each major category, a contrast with some smaller-bank trends discussed in Simmons First National’s quarterly results.
