Cleo AI refunds totaling more than $15.8 million are going to customers of the cash advance app, the Federal Trade Commission said. The Oct. 8, 2026 announcement says 2,124,796 eligible customers will receive PayPal payments beginning Oct. 27.
How the Cleo AI refunds will work
The FTC’s Oct. 8 notice says eligible customers paid for qualifying instant cash advances. The agency expects to send notification emails through Oct. 26 and start issuing PayPal payments the following day.
Recipients will have 30 days to redeem their payments, according to the regulator. The FTC said consumers do not need to pay a fee or provide account information to receive a refund, and it directed questions to the program’s administrator, Rust Consulting.
The distribution covers a large customer pool, so the average payment will be modest if the full amount is divided evenly. Actual refunds may vary, and the FTC notice does not promise a uniform amount for every recipient.
What led to the FTC redress program
The refunds stem from a 2025 case in which the FTC alleged Cleo AI overstated the cash advances consumers could receive and how quickly funds would arrive. The agency also alleged that customers faced added fees for expedited transfers that could arrive later than advertised and encountered obstacles when canceling subscriptions.
Cleo AI agreed to a $17 million monetary judgment and related conduct provisions, while the company did not receive a new penalty in the Oct. 8 distribution announcement. The FTC’s case page lists the litigation documents and the 2026 refund update.
For investors and fintech users, the case highlights how product claims, fee disclosure and cancellation design can create regulatory exposure. The FTC published its refund announcement on Oct. 8, 2026, while the settlement originated in 2025 and payments are scheduled to begin Oct. 27, 2026. This is a consumer-redress and regulatory update, so a market-price chart is not applicable.
