Google and Voltus announced a 1-gigawatt virtual power plant across the PJM electricity region on October 22. The expanded agreement is ten times larger than their earlier 100-megawatt arrangement.

Google Virtual Power Plant Expands Across PJM

Google said Voltus will combine flexible capacity from homes and businesses into one coordinated resource. Participating assets can include smart thermostats, batteries and industrial equipment.

During peak demand, those assets will temporarily reduce electricity use to support grid reliability. Customers can receive bill savings or cash payments for providing the flexible capacity.

The companies did not publish a deployment completion date or project cost. The October 22 announcement described an expanded agreement, not a completed one-gigawatt installation.

Google Virtual Power Plant Grows Tenfold

The expansion builds on a 100-megawatt agreement from earlier in 2026. Google described the new portfolio as one of the largest known distributed-capacity deployments funded by a hyperscaler.

A virtual power plant coordinates many smaller assets rather than constructing one conventional generating station. Its value depends on customer participation, asset availability and grid-dispatch performance.

The agreement follows rising electricity demand across the United States. Recent federal data showed multiple summer grid-demand records, increasing attention on flexible resources.

Energy Markets Watch Distributed Capacity

The project adds another power strategy for technology companies managing electricity constraints. Google has also used long-term procurement, including a nuclear power agreement, to secure capacity.

Distributed flexibility can complement generation without replacing the need for transmission and firm supply. Performance during PJM peak events will determine the project’s practical grid value.

Investors are also watching companies that serve expanding data-center power demand. Bloom Energy’s latest results showed strong growth, but execution and capacity remain central risks.
