Regions Financial reported third-quarter earnings of $611 million, or $0.71 per diluted share, on October 16. Diluted EPS increased 16% from a year earlier, while adjusted EPS reached $0.73.
The Birmingham-based lender also reported stronger margins and lower charge-offs. The results followed other regional-bank updates, including PNC’s third-quarter earnings.
Regions Financial earnings benefit from a wider margin
Total revenue increased to $1.97 billion from $1.91 billion in the second quarter. Net interest income rose 2% sequentially to $1.30 billion as fixed-rate asset turnover, loan growth and hedging income offset higher funding costs.
The taxable-equivalent net interest margin increased two basis points to 3.68%. That compared with 3.66% in the second quarter and 3.59% a year earlier, extending the margin trend seen across recent regional-bank results.

Loan growth offsets lower average deposits
Average loans increased to $99.2 billion from $98.7 billion in the second quarter. Commercial and industrial loans led the change, while average deposits declined 1.2% sequentially to $129.1 billion.
Regions said its interest-bearing deposit cost remained at 1.70%. The bank estimated its common equity Tier 1 ratio at 10.8%, compared with 10.7% in the prior quarter.
Regions Financial earnings show improved credit trends
Net charge-offs declined to $72 million, or 0.29% of average loans, from $102 million and 0.42% in the second quarter. Nonperforming loans fell to 0.59% of total loans from 0.67%.
The provision for credit losses held at $68 million, while the allowance ratio declined two basis points to 1.61%. Investors can compare the balance-sheet mix with Truist’s third-quarter results.
