- IEA oil stock release plans now prioritize about 100 million remaining barrels.
- Members have already released approximately 330 million barrels under the March 2026 action.
- More than 20 million barrels of diesel are scheduled for accelerated release.
The IEA oil stock release entered a faster phase after member governments reviewed tight global supply conditions. The International Energy Agency published the decision on October 15, separately from the March emergency action that initiated the releases.
IEA oil stock release accelerates
The Governing Board said members had released about 330 million barrels. It agreed to complete roughly 100 million remaining barrels promptly, subject to national circumstances.
The eventual volume will exceed the original 400 million-barrel commitment. Some members released more than their March pledges, while others still intend to increase deliveries.

Diesel supply receives priority
The IEA identified continued oil-market tightness, particularly for diesel. Members agreed to accelerate more than 20 million barrels of diesel and encouraged available crude production and refining capacity.
The move followed the March collective action responding to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The agency will continue monitoring releases and advise the G7 and member governments on further measures.
What energy markets should watch
Faster stock releases may ease near-term product shortages, but their price effect depends on delivery timing and refining availability. Investors must distinguish committed volumes from barrels already delivered.
The decision adds context to record U.S. electricity demand, the RBA inflation outlook and recent U.S. producer-price pressure. The full figures appear in the IEA Governing Board statement.
