Key Insights

  • Windows 11 update tests showed responsiveness gains of up to 20%.
  • Microsoft said 8GB PCs can retain up to 2GB more active data in memory.
  • New Search actions are available to Insiders before a broader 2026 rollout.

The Windows 11 update targets performance and memory use across Microsoft’s operating system. Microsoft published the changes on October 15 and said several features are beginning broader rollouts while others remain in testing.

Windows 11 update improves responsiveness

Microsoft measured response-time improvements of up to 20% across Search, Start, Settings, File Explorer and other tools. The comparison used Windows 11 builds 26300.9550 and 26200.7628, with results varying by device.

The company also changed memory management for lower-specification computers. PCs with 8GB of memory can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory instead of moving it to slower storage.

Windows 11 update reduces background use

Widgets now load on demand on devices with 8GB of memory or less. Microsoft said this can free more than 200MB for applications and active work.

The Photos application launches up to 20% faster in Microsoft’s measurements. Bluetooth changes also cut supported AirPods pairing time by up to 15 seconds.

Search actions and AI features expand

A redesigned Search interface lets users change settings and manage windows from taskbar results. Insiders receive the feature first, with broader availability expected later in 2026.

Microsoft also added Copilot-assisted Ink Canvas tools on supported devices. The rollout follows wider enterprise concerns about AI governance incidents, advances in local AI-agent models and new forecasting datasets.

The official Windows announcement documents the test builds, rollout stages and hardware requirements.
