Eastern Bankshares reported higher third-quarter earnings as loan growth and lower expenses offset softer noninterest income. The Boston-based bank released the results on October 22, 2026, ahead of its October 23 conference call.

Eastern Bankshares Earnings Reach $111M

Eastern Bankshares’ third-quarter release showed net income increasing from $105.2 million to $111.0 million. Diluted earnings per share rose to $0.51 from $0.48, while return on average assets improved to 1.41% from 1.37%.

Net interest income increased 2.3% to $257.9 million. However, the tax-equivalent net interest margin declined to 3.62% from 3.66% because higher earning-asset yields did not fully offset increased deposit costs.

Loan Growth Supports the Balance Sheet

Period-end loans increased by $261 million to $23.97 billion, led by commercial real estate and commercial-and-industrial lending. Deposits rose by $98 million to $26.02 billion, leaving deposits above loans at quarter-end.

Wealth assets under administration reached $11.6 billion, including $10.8 billion of assets under management. Investors can compare Eastern’s scale and mix with First National’s margin expansion, Capital One’s $3.5 billion quarter and Rithm Capital’s servicing gains.

Credit Quality and Capital Returns Improve

Non-performing loans declined by $24.6 million to $84.8 million, equal to 0.36% of total loans. Net charge-offs represented nine basis points of average loans, down from 17 basis points in the second quarter.

Eastern returned $89.1 million to shareholders, including $56.7 million through share repurchases. Its common equity tier 1 ratio edged up to 13.02% from 13.00%, while tangible shareholders’ equity as a share of tangible assets declined to 9.64% from 10.06%.
