MarketAxess revenue increased modestly in the third quarter even as trading activity expanded at a much faster rate. The electronic fixed-income marketplace reported results on October 23 for the three months ended September 30, giving investors a current view of trading demand and merger-related costs.
Key Insights
- Third-quarter revenue rose 1% from a year earlier to $210.4 million, while total trading average daily volume increased 13%.
- Block-trading average daily volume climbed 21% to $5.4 billion, and portfolio-trading volume advanced 37% to $1.9 billion.
- Reported earnings fell to $1.53 per share as expenses rose 10%, including $13.1 million of costs tied to the pending Intercontinental Exchange merger.
MarketAxess revenue trails volume growth
MarketAxess generated $179.9 million in commission revenue, roughly flat from the prior-year quarter, while services revenue increased 6% to $30.5 million. The gap between the 13% increase in overall trading volume and the 1% revenue gain indicates that the mix and economics of transactions mattered as much as activity levels.
Large and automated transactions were important growth areas. Block-trading activity rose 21%, portfolio-trading volume increased 37%, and dealer-initiated average daily volume advanced 2% to $1.5 billion. Mid-X, the company’s midpoint liquidity offering, recorded a 196% increase in average daily volume. The results add a fixed-income perspective to the broader market volatility discussed in our Nasdaq selloff analysis.
Merger costs weigh on reported profit
Operating expenses rose 10% to $136.0 million, and the reported operating margin declined 5.6 percentage points to 35.4%. Net income fell to $54.0 million from $68.3 million, taking diluted earnings per share down to $1.53 from $1.84.
The adjusted picture was steadier. Excluding notable items, expenses were approximately flat at $122.9 million, adjusted operating margin increased 0.6 percentage points to 41.6%, and adjusted earnings reached $1.86 per share on adjusted net income of $65.7 million. The principal notable item was $13.1 million of merger-related expense connected with MarketAxess’s pending combination with Intercontinental Exchange.
What investors should watch next
MarketAxess highlighted X-Pro, which includes an artificial-intelligence-powered dealer-selection tool, as part of its effort to improve execution and workflow efficiency. Investors will want to see whether higher adoption converts strong trading-volume growth into faster commission revenue growth, especially when transaction sizes and product mix shift.
The pending merger also makes regulatory timing and integration costs central variables. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s recently published 2027 examination priorities provide context for oversight of trading technology, while SS&C’s quarterly results offer another view of demand across financial-market infrastructure.
The quarter therefore showed resilient trading engagement but limited near-term operating leverage on a reported basis. Future updates should reveal whether the stronger block and portfolio-trading activity persists and how quickly merger expenses give way to any strategic benefits.
