Key Insights

  • U.S. electricity demand set new peak-load records across PJM, ERCOT and SWPP during summer 2026.
  • PJM reached 162.6 gigawatts, while ERCOT peaked at 91.1 GW and SWPP reached 58.0 GW.
  • EIA linked most of the regional peaks to heat waves that increased cooling demand.

U.S. electricity demand reached record hourly levels across three major regional grids during summer 2026. The Energy Information Administration published its analysis on October 15, while the underlying peaks occurred between July 2 and July 27.

U.S. electricity demand reaches record peaks

PJM recorded a peak load of 162.6 gigawatts on July 2, exceeding its June 2025 record by 1.3%. The market coordinates electricity across 13 states and the District of Columbia.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas reached 91.1 GW on July 22, 6.5% above its previous record. The Southwest Power Pool peaked at 58.0 GW on July 27, surpassing its prior high by 3.5%.

Heat waves drive U.S. electricity demand

EIA said most peaks occurred during regional heat waves as air-conditioning use increased. California and New England also came within 2% of their previous records, while New York was within 3%.

MISO reached 121.5 GW on June 30, the highest reading in EIA’s Hourly Electric Grid Monitor. However, it remained below the operator’s separate 2011 record of 127.1 GW.

Why the records matter for energy markets

Higher peak demand can increase stress on generation reserves, transmission networks and short-term power prices. It also raises the value of flexible capacity, storage and demand-response systems during extreme weather.

The data adds context to AI-driven infrastructure investment, recent analysis of supply-chain chokepoints and the energy contribution to U.S. producer inflation. EIA’s October 15 report and Hourly Electric Grid Monitor provide the underlying Form EIA-930 data.
