The U.K. economy grew modestly in August as stronger production offset flat services and another decline in construction. The Office for National Statistics estimated that monthly real gross domestic product increased 0.1%, slowing from the 0.4% gains recorded in July and June.
Production carries August growth
Production output rose 0.8% during the month, helped by a 1.2% increase in manufacturing and a 1.4% rise in mining and quarrying. Nine of 13 manufacturing subsectors expanded, with pharmaceutical production up 5.1% and transport equipment up 1.8%.
Services, the largest part of the economy, showed no monthly growth. Wholesale trade rebounded, but declines in administrative and support services and consumer-facing industries limited the overall result.

Three-month growth strengthens
GDP grew 0.7% in the three months to August compared with the three months to May, marking an eighth consecutive three-month expansion. Services increased 0.9% over that period, while production fell 0.2% and construction declined 1.0%.
Compared with a year earlier, GDP was 2.1% higher in August. Professional, scientific and technical activities and information and communication made the largest positive contributions to annual growth. Our GDP explainer outlines how monthly and quarterly estimates differ.
What investors should watch
The statistical release was published on October 15 and measures economic activity through August. The ONS also revised June monthly growth to 0.4% from 0.3% and cautioned that early GDP estimates can change as more information arrives.
Construction fell for a fourth consecutive month, led by weaker new work and private housing. That weakness contrasts with the production rebound and leaves investors watching September indicators, interest-rate expectations and company guidance for confirmation of the economy’s direction.
