U.S. industrial output accelerated in September, offering a firmer read on factory and utility activity heading into the final quarter. The Federal Reserve’s G.17 release, published October 16, said total industrial production increased 0.7% after a revised 0.1% gain in August.

Utilities lead the September gain

The headline increase reflected broad gains across the Fed’s three major industry groups. Utilities posted the largest monthly move at 3.5%, manufacturing rose 0.3%, and mining increased 0.2%. The Fed’s summary table put the total production index at 104.0, up from 103.3 in August and 2.2% above September 2025.

The report adds a supply-side signal to other recent indicators. Fusion Market News previously covered the 0.8% rise in September retail sales and the latest U.S. natural gas storage increase, both of which provide additional context for demand and energy conditions.

Manufacturing improves as utilization rises

Manufacturing output’s 0.3% increase was modest beside utilities but still marked a positive month for the largest industrial component. Capacity utilization for total industry rose 0.5 percentage point to 76.7%. Manufacturing utilization increased to 75.8%, while utilities utilization reached 73.8%.

Investors often read utilization alongside inflation and growth data because tightening spare capacity can affect costs, pricing power, and future investment. The figures remain below long-run norms, however, which tempers the signal. For a broader inflation comparison, see the recent ECB inflation and growth outlook.
