Globe Life reported higher third-quarter premium revenue and stronger health sales, although net income per share and total insurance underwriting income declined. The insurer’s results cover the quarter ended September 30 and were released on October 21.
Key Insights
- Premium revenue increased 7% year over year to $1.311 billion, led by a 16% increase in health premiums.
- Net operating EPS edged up to $4.84 from $4.81, while reported net income per diluted share fell to $4.62 from $4.73.
- Book value per share rose 23% to $85.35, and Globe Life repurchased 1.1 million shares for $185 million.
Globe Life Premium Revenue Gains 7%
Total premium revenue reached $1.311 billion, compared with $1.231 billion a year earlier. Life premiums increased 2% to $864.6 million, while health premiums rose 16% to $446.9 million. Health net sales climbed 32% to $94.1 million.
Net operating income per diluted share was $4.84, slightly above $4.81 in the year-earlier quarter. Reported net income per diluted share declined to $4.62 from $4.73. The difference shows that premium growth did not translate evenly across Globe Life’s reported and operating measures.
Health Growth Offsets Underwriting Pressure
Insurance underwriting income fell 4% to $481.8 million. Life underwriting margin declined 5% to $458.2 million, while health underwriting margin increased 7% to $115.6 million, according to Globe Life’s official earnings release.
United American reported a $6.4 million health underwriting loss. Globe Life attributed the result partly to roughly $16 million of losses tied to Evry and $7 million of prior-period Medicare Supplement claims associated with a federal processing delay. Those items are important when assessing whether current margins represent the business’s underlying run rate.
Book Value and Buybacks Strengthen the Capital Story
Book value per share increased 23% to $85.35. Excluding accumulated other comprehensive income, book value per share rose 11% to $103.62. Globe Life also repurchased 1.1 million shares for $185 million during the quarter.
The insurer said 97% of its fixed-maturity portfolio was investment grade, with an average yield of 5.33%. For broader financial-sector comparisons, investors can review Fusion Market News’ recent Popular earnings analysis, American Express outlook, and Federal Reserve market-week preview.
