Simmons First National Corporation reported third-quarter net income of $47.1 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, as its net interest margin improved but balance-sheet contraction and restructuring costs weighed on reported results. Net income fell from $66.7 million in the second quarter.
Adjusted net income rose to $79.0 million from $72.2 million, while adjusted diluted earnings per share increased to $0.54 from $0.50. The company released the results after the market closed on October 15 and scheduled its earnings call for October 16. The results add to a busy bank reporting period that included PNC’s Q3 earnings and loan growth.
Margin expansion supports core earnings
Net interest income increased to $204.0 million from $200.6 million in the second quarter. Simmons attributed the gain to higher loan yields and a lower cost of deposits, which fell eight basis points to 1.85%.
The 3.92% net interest margin was 42 basis points higher than a year earlier. Management said prior balance-sheet repositioning, loan repricing and funding-cost optimization helped the comparison. Financial-sector investors are also tracking capital-market indicators such as BlackRock’s record assets under management.

Balance-sheet contraction remains the tradeoff
Loans declined by about $597 million during the quarter as paydowns, early repayments and the runoff of lower-yielding credits outweighed new production. Deposits fell by roughly $1.1 billion, including a sharp reduction in brokered deposits to $935 million from $1.81 billion.
Credit indicators weakened modestly. Nonperforming loans rose to $179.9 million from $166.1 million, and the annualized net charge-off ratio increased to 0.27% from 0.20%. The allowance for credit losses equaled 1.37% of loans.
Costs and the next investor checkpoint
Reported noninterest expense climbed to $182.0 million from $147.7 million. Simmons identified $43.1 million of branch and real-estate rightsizing, severance, professional-services and other specified costs. Excluding those items, adjusted noninterest expense fell to $138.9 million from $140.3 million.
Investors will now weigh the improved margin and adjusted efficiency against shrinking loans, deposits and higher nonperforming loans. Simmons said it plans to outline strategic objectives and future financial targets at an investor day in December. Brokerage activity provides another read on market participation, as shown in Interactive Brokers’ Q3 results.
